Imitations from an American Collection 5
M206+. Obverse type of L. Calpurnius Piso Frugi, reverse type of M. Volteius, after 78 BC; cf. Cr-340/1 (O) and 385/1 (R), 3.64g. Both sides somewhat stylized, no legends.
(M55+). Types of L. Rutilius Flaccus, after 77 BC; cf. Cr-387/1, 4.81g. Both sides stylized; somewhat blundered, recognizable obverse legend; blundered, meaningless reverse legend. See M55 for another example of these dies. That coin found in Romania; presumably this one as well.
M207+. Types of L. Rutilius Flaccus, after 77 BC; Chitescu-24 (same dies), cf. Cr-387/1, 3.63g. Both sides stylized; traces of blundered obverse legend; blundered, meaningless reverse legend.
M208+. Obverse type of L. Julius Bursio, reverse type of P. Satrienus, after 77 BC; cf. Cr-352/1 (O) and 388/1 (R), 3.42g. Both sides a bit stylized; slightly crude, essentially correct reverse legend.
M209+. Obverse type of L. Rustius (?), various reverse prototypes, after 76 BC; cf Cr-389/1 (O)?, 3.91g. Stylized bust of Mars (or Minerva?), stylized quadriga; obverse SC, meaningless and inappropriate legend below and before bust; blundered, meaningless reverse legend. Seemingly combines elements from two helmeted types: SC from Mars of L. Rustius, armored bust and necklace from Minerva of L. Rubrius Dossenus. Perhaps the latter is a more plausible prototype, with DOS misunderstood as SC, but SC is hardly so ubiquitous on Republican denarii that a Dacian might think it appropriate to any imitation.
M210+. Obverse type of Q. Titius, reverse type of L. Rustius, after 76 BC; cf. Cr-341/1 (O) and 389/1 (R), 2.82g. Both sides stylized; remnant of inappropriate legend on obverse; no reverse legend.
M211+. Obverse type of Cn. Lentulus, reverse type of M. Volteius, after 76 BC; cf. Cr-393/1 (O) and 385/1 (R), 3.38g. Obverse Genius quite stylized, and unusually vigorous and attractive; reverse slightly stylized; accurate GPR on obverse, wrongly placed before bust; remarkable reverse legend M CAES. If the reverse legend is intentional and not a remarkable coincidence, this must date well after the two prototypes. The question of who might have struck such a piece is open.
M212+. Types of C. Postumius, after 74 BC; cf. Cr-394/1, 3.53g. Both sides stylized; blundered, meaningless reverse legend.
M213+. Obverse type of C. Censorinus, reverse type of C. Postumius, after 74 BC; cf. Cr-346/2 (O) and 394/1 (R), 4.81g. Both sides stylized; blundered, meaningless, very crude reverse legend.
M214+. Obverse type of Lucius Axius Naso, reverse type of Q. Antonius Balbus, after 71 BC; cf. Cr-400/1a (O) and 364/1 (R), 2.95g, serrate. "Barbarous" head of Mars, stylized quadriga; no obverse legend other than blundered, meaningless control number; meaningless, abstract reverse legend.
M215+. Types of C. Piso Frugi, after 67 BC' cf. Cr-408/1, 3.14g. Obverse attractive, slightly stylized; reverse quite "barbarous"; no obverse legend other than N behind head, X before; blundered, recognizable reverse legend.
